Day 8 - Running
I decided to just run instead of trying to bike in the dark (safety first!). I decided to try to keep a pace of 5 MPH and it worked out pretty well, I ran for a continuous 20 mins, at about 10 mins I increased the incline and at 15 mins the same. I RAN FOR 20 MINUTES STRAIGHT! That is so cool, I am feeling like this actually works...exercise can improve you, who would have thought. Yeah, so I did a 5 min warm up 20 run and 5 min warm down, I did the stretching before and after to ensure all things were safe and flexible.
I am looking forward to the next run, I think I am going to shoot for a 40 min total run.
I still need shoes, these shoes are not really made for running and I am feeling it.
Day 6 - Running, outside
I need shoes, my feet were not loving it. I am not sure what kind to get but I will keep you posted. I will say that my wife has been running now for a couple months training for an half marathon and shoes made all the difference with her knees. I need to do the same and get some. There are people that do know what they are talking about when coming to running, find them. My wife's shoes were about $ 90, but she has had luck with them.
Day 5 - Swim
Going along with that last statement, don't try to swim in really cold water, I mean don't try it without a wetsuit. I thought I was going to drown...seriously. I waded into that darn lake and it was cold, but like all swimming in cold water - just jump in! Not when trying to swim for 30 mins. I got about 250 ft and thought I was going to drown, I could not breath. I turned around and after another 100 ft was trying to touch the bottom of that lake, I had to calm down float on my back and slow down. I obviously made it back alive, but I have a better appreciation for people who die in cold water. I watched a show that said that water transfer heat away from your body 25 times faster than air. I believe it.
I will be calling the school for my next swim, I hope they have room for me.
Day 4 - Strength
Strength training really knocked me out. I am trying a simple toning routine with the standard stuff, crunches, lunges, tricep dips, obliques. Ouch, I am sore, I went to fast to hard and I am feeling it. Did I mention the pushups? I actually did ok there, it was all the stomach exercises, they were HARD. The plank is the most strenuous I think, toes and elbows holding yourself up with a straight back. I won't give up on it for sure, but I need to slow down a little and rest a little more between sets.
I will post the paper I got and make sure to give proper credit.
Day 3 - Running, again
I am thinking I am crazy for trying to do this whole dang thing, but I am going to stick with it, I more than doubled my time over day 1.
Day 2 - Biking
If I had one recommendation, ride your bike for a few minutes, maybe a couple a hundred meters before taking an hour long ride. I wish I had. The seat was to low and and the seat was set to far forward. I bought a small little computer for about $15 dollars and it was well worth it, attach it and take a short ride and get things adjusted before you try the hour long ride.
The hour long ride was a good learning experience, as I was approaching the last 15 mins or so I was tired. I didn't want to kill myself since I am only at day 2, but it occurred to me that this whole training program and the triathlon itself was in fact to push ourselves. I pushed a little harder, it felt good and after eating quite a bit when I got home I felt pretty good the rest of the day.

Day 1 - Officially
Today I was supposed to run 30 mins. I did. I have to take it in stride though, I had to consider anything other than standing running. Running feels really hard.
I had to use the treadmill, I take that back, I didn't want to try to run outside for 30 mins just in case I felt wiped out and got stuck somewhere. I was having a hard time feeling like the treadmill wasn't just a fast walk though so I sped up the treadmill and after .68 miles I was winded, I was kinda hurting. I found out that I need to slow down a little and remember that a lot can happen in 8 weeks, but not overnight. I made 1.38 miles though and I really don't feel wiped out, even though at the time I was questioning my judgement about doing this. My wife is training for a half-marathon and she really is proof that this works, she has done an amazing job and because of her I believe I can do it.
Tomorrow is the 60 min bike ride, the tire is fixed so I am good to go. Until then...
